Temperatures are rising and we have summer on the brain, which means we have been browsing swimsuits for a couple months here in Texas! The pool and our local swimming holes are the only guaranteed respite from the inevitable brutal heat, so comfortable, ethical swimsuits are a MUST for us! While we strive to keep our swimsuit collections to a minimum, the truth is that during the Texas summers we spend more time in our swimsuits than our regular clothing! Replacing the previous year’s worn through swimsuit each summer is a necessary evil to keep ourselves proper while enjoying the water with our kiddos.
We have rounded up 5 ethical swimsuit brands that we find ourselves coming back to time and time again!
Established in 2014, Kortni has created a swimsuit company that allows every body type to feel comfortable and confident in their ‘swimmers’! Made in the USA, these mix and match swimsuits inspire creativity, ensuring that no one will have a suit that looks just like yours! We love that their photos are of real women with beautiful real bodies. They also carry mini swimmers for kids and men’s Euro fit swim shorts. This was my swimsuit replacement choice for this year – I purchased the black latter-back top, and the green ruched high-waisted bottoms.
Kore Swim is made with purpose in Los Angeles, California and has a unique edgy feel. We love the interesting swimsuit silhouettes, spot-on color selections, and creative cut outs.
prAna is well known for their ethical yoga gear but they also carry very practical, athletically styled swimwear! If you are looking for a suit to snorkel or surf in, they are your brand. prAna is a pioneering Fair Trade USA brand partner. In addition to Fair Trade practices, the brand also focuses on using environmentally conscious materials that have a reduced environmental impact such as recycled polyester and organic cotton. They carry full men & women’s apparel, swimwear and accessories.
Vintage inspired, Jessica Rey, actress and founder of Rey Swimwear, started this company with the premise ‘who says it has to be itsy bitsy’. They state on their website that ‘all of our swimsuits are proudly and ethically manufactured in California. Rey Swimwear only works with partners who share our values and believe in ethical production. Our manufacturers have rigorous compliance standards against which they’re constantly assessed. They’re responsible for upholding production and sourcing practices across areas such as human rights, health/safety, and fair wages, thus respecting the dignity of all people- not only those who wear our swimsuits, but those who make them. Our dedication to ethical production is reflected in our pricing.’ They also carry children’s swimsuits.
Another vintage inspired company with creative silhouettes: off the shoulder, one shoulder, interesting cut-outs, unique back detailing, and beautiful sheer paneling. They carry kids swimsuits as well. Their factory is located in Guatemala and was passed down through the family and started by making items for many different companies. Now, the factory sews only for Albion. Read a little more about their fascinating background story. Their website says, “we are also committed to our environment and our community by continually striving to make our manufacturing facility greener each day by recycling plant waste and by using earth friendly materials in our products. We follow fair labor practices with all of our employees and business partners to create a sustainable work environment.”
