We have had the pleasure of meeting Evan, the owner of Evan Brooke Ethical Clothing (EBEC), in real life on a number of occasions because she lives nearby in San Antonio! From Austin originally, Evan is a mom of 4 with a long time love of sewing. After reading Lioness Arising by Lisa Bevere, she was compelled to use her voice to raise awareness of women caught in human trafficking.
In late 2012, friends called Evan to tell of their plans to move overseas to do something about human trafficking and forced labor. Their plan was to start a garment manufacturing business with the mission to employ the oppressed and marginalized of society, those who have been discriminated against, exploited, or sex trafficked. Purnaa, a Nepalese ethical garment manufacturer, empowers women through living wage employment, offer skills training, leadership, language education, and safe, dignified employment for survivors of exploitation and the most oppressed and marginalized of society. Purnaa puts it well when they say “we believe that social business creates sustainable ways to address real issues. It’s not charity, it’s real jobs that empower people to a fresh start and a changed life.”
With this partnership with Purnaa established, Evan launched EBEC, which provides clothing for the whole family made with social and environmental responsibility. Every EBEC product has a story that includes empowering women and changing the world. You can wear something for a change!
Recently, Evan has been spending her time putting together a collection of t-shirts that are entirely grown and sewn in Texas! She has partnered with Open Arms here in Austin (which empowers refugee women), to produce the shirts. If you are interested in wholesale orders of these Texas tees, please contact Evan and let her know.
